VANDALS IN PARIS
by Antoine Flandrin & Thomas Von Wittich
Vandals in Paris captures a pivotal moment in contemporary urban art when the streets of Paris transformed into an open-air gallery. Franco-American journalist Antoine Flandrin and German photographer Thomas Von Wittich document the work of approximately fifty graffiti artists, street artists, and activists through striking black and white photography and bilingual interviews (French/English). The book chronicles three major innovations reshaping Paris's street art scene: the emergence of cross-generational movements spanning from pioneers in their sixties to internet-savvy younger artists; the blurring lines between graffiti and street art as both forms evolve and mix; and the powerful role of Instagram in creating connected international communities. Featuring diverse voices including a notable rise of women artists and figures from both suburbs and affluent neighborhoods, this work reveals how these urban artists questioned and criticized French society while developing new visual languages. Shot during 2020-2021 against the backdrop of COVID-19 and social unrest, Vandals in Paris presents an honest portrait of a city marked by creativity, rebellion, and deep social inequalities. Far from the smooth tourist capital of postcards. The book features leading artists including Feito, Dérape, Lady.K, Dystur, Skame, Sun7, Retro, Seth, Mglo, La Fleuj, Nargue, Stesi, Lek, Katre, Ox, Madame, Slice, Druide, Dize, Funco, 3DT/CKT, Keag&Sore, Frez, K7, Kraken, Ecilop, Toile, Puls, Skeo, Staze, Ikarus, Oscoruru, Joz, Levalet, Vermibus, Nake, Pö, TS-HO, Douceur Xtreme, Jore, Amef, Rez1. and dozens more who continue to reclaim Paris's walls without permission.
